One of the most important images we all need is a headshot.
Showing our face to readers, in addition to sharing our words, gives us the opportunity to give them a sense of knowing us better. It can help us improve their level of trust in us.
You can create your head shot many different ways. Most are a pain. Easy ways mostly don't look very professional.
I tried some of both before settling on the method I used to create the one you see in this article and elsewhere on my website and in my products.
I used my phone to take my own selfies. The results, as you might imagine, were not good. lol
I asked my wife to take some pictures of me. Better than my selfies, but still not professional enough.
I considered paying a photographer friend to take professional head shots for me. I never got to the point of pulling the trigger on that $200-300 expense; not to mention the hassle of going to his studio for an appointment.
Luckily, I found a way to get a few dozen head shots made for me, at a very low price (think it was under $15), without having to leave the house.
It was quick. It was easy. I got several great shots to choose from.
I found this website, uploaded 10 (not very good) images of myself – alone and in groups – chose whether I wanted casual or professional shots, and then I let the website do the work.
Here are a few examples of the 40 images the site generated for me. I was able to download them all. They also show you thumbnails where you can mark your favorites (what you're seeing below) and then just download those.
The 10 photos I uploaded were a variety of pictures my wife, family and friends had taken of me and posted on social media over the years. All of course had backgrounds and other people in the shots. You have 10 pictures of yourself that are at least as good as the ones I used. We all do.
The site tells you what to expect. “Not every shot will be good. You'll get at least one great one.” I found several that I could have used, but one I thought was clearly better than others.
I revisited the site about 9 months after I first generated these photos and I see they still are available in my account. For another small fee, I can of course generate more variations for myself or for others.
