About

Hi, I’m Kel.
I’m creating this website to share how I am building an online business that allows me to supplement my income while working a few hours a week from home. By sharing what I’m doing, I know that I also can help others do the same.
My goal is not to “quit my day job” right away. I have a great job that I enjoy and that pays well. Instead, my goal is to create a “side hustle” that will allow me to retire in a few years, and that is something I’ll want to continue working in after I’ve done that. Something that I can do no matter where my wife and I may travel.
So. You may be wondering why you should listen to a guy who’s doing this part-time, and just getting started. It’s a fair question.
First, I’m not really just getting started. Though my career is in IT, I’ve done quite a bit of work in and around online marketing as well for several years. I’ve written, sold, trained, and supported software that’s used by marketers and sales people in the automotive, career, insurance, and healthcare industries. Of course, I’ve done a lot of non-marketing-related IT work too throughout my career.
Marketing has always fascinated me. I love the dashboards I’ve built that help marketers see how many people converted at each step, and which steps they should tweak to increase customer value. I love setting up funnels and split testing offers.
I’ve studied these things with every piece of marketing software I’ve developed, learning loads from the clients and employers with whom I worked. Occasionally throughout the years, I’ve even set up websites for myself to sell affiliate products to a list of email subscribers. Every time life got busy, I ended up putting aside those projects and kept making my living in IT.
Now that I’m ~5 years (maybe less) from retiring from the day job, I won’t be putting aside my online business this time around.
But yeah. Maybe you’re still wondering if you shouldn’t be somewhere else, learning to build your business from someone who’s been doing that for 35 years instead of from a guy who’s been in IT that long?
I can introduce you to some of my mentors who’ve been doing marketing and sales that long, and some others who started building their online businesses 5-20 years ago too.
But here’s the thing. If you’re just getting started on building your online business, following my journey probably will help motivate you through that difficult stage more than if you were to try to follow theirs. (By the way, nobody says you can’t do both.)
I’m a big fan of analogies, so here’s one for you. If you wanted to climb a mountain, which climbing coach is most likely to motivate you to the top? The one who’s done it forever and who stands at the top of the mountain yelling down to you about how easy it all is? Or the one who leads you step by step through what he’s just traveled, reaching back to pull you up as you need it?
Maybe having both would help.
I’ve learned a ton about online marketing from many different mentors. I’ve learned more from the ones who tell me what they’re doing that works today than from the ones who built huge followings 20 years ago and continue to market to them. I have learned from both, but would suggest that if you’re just starting out, you’ll get more from a coach who’s closer to where you are. One who just navigated the rock you’re about to climb over and is ready to lend a hand to help you get past it.
In Spring 2020, I had a 0-person email list (having built a few small ones over the years, but let them go whenever I got too busy to attend to them). Mid-Summer 2020, I have a list of 150. Tiny, yes. But that’s the point here.
I’m not a guy who’s going to tell you what works for someone who built a huge subscriber list a long time ago. I’ll be showing you how to go from 0 to 150, and beyond, in 2020 and beyond.
So come along. Ask questions. Learn. Do. Let’s build our online businesses together with what works today.
If you’d like to know more about the program I’m following to build my business and this blog, take a look at it here:
John is unlike any other mentor from whom I’ve learned. He started his online business quite some time ago, yet he also knows what works to get started today, and he’s one of the most patient and effective I’ve seen at explaining everything step-by-step. Not only does it help get started, everything is in small bites so that the next time I need to do something again, I can easily find where he taught me the first time and follow it again.
Watch John’s free training above, learn, take actionable notes and use them. Watch until the end to see how you can join the same coaching program that I’m in.
If you have any questions, I’m happy to help, just drop me an email!
